How to play 8-ball pool

Understand the basics. 8-ball is a game played with a cue ball and 15 “object balls,” numbered 1 through 15. One player must pocket balls of the group numbered 1 through 7 (solid colors), while the other player has 9 through 15 (stripes). To win, you must be the player to pocket either group first, and then legally pocket the 8-ball. Pool is rich with unique terminology that can be difficult for new players to understand. Reference the terms as you learn to play. If you aren’t sure what something means, ask a veteran pool player to clarify. Object balls: The striped and solid balls numbered 1-15. Every pool ball but the cue ball. The “object balls” are the balls that you are trying to knock into the pockets. Pocket: The baskets along the rim of the pool table. There are six pockets: one in each corner, and one at the midpoint of each long side. “Pocketing” is the act of knocking one or more numbered “object” balls into a pocket. Rail: The bank along the side of the pool tabletop. Scratch: When a player accidentally knocks the cue ball into a pocket. If you scratch, remove one of your sunk balls from a pocket and place it back in the center of the table. Your opponent now has the chance to shoot from his or her chosen spot at the top of the table. Open table: The table is “open” when the choice of groups (stripes or solids) has not yet been determined. When the table is open, it is legal to hit a solid first in order to make a stripe or solid. Foul penalty: Opposing player gets the cue ball in hand. This means that the player can place the cue ball anywhere on the table to take his or her next shot.

Tips & Tricks for Pool

Do you keep losing to the computer when you play 8-ball pool? Learn a winning technique by taking note of these top tips:

Tip 1: Extend Your Aim

Play pool like a pro by extending your aim with a piece of paper. Often when lining up your shot, direction markers won’t make it all the way to the hole. Fill the space with paper to guarantee ultimate accuracy.

Tip 2: Take Your Time

When you play pool online make sure to keep your cool even if there’s a timer. Rushing your shot is a common way to make a mistake. One slip of the finger and you’ll be handing play to the computer.

Tip 3: Add Some English to Your Shot

English refers to the spin on a cue ball when you play pool. Adding something extra to your shot can get you out of a tricky situation.

Common fouls in Pool

Online pool has many of the same pitfalls as the real thing. So, pay attention and don’t commit these five fouls:

Foul 1: Failing to Hit Your Own Balls

If the cue ball fails to hit your own ball (or any ball at all) then it is a foul and control of the games goes to your opponent.

Foul 2: No Ball Hits the Rail

To prevent overly defensive tactics, if the object ball or cue ball fails to touch the rails during a shot sequence then play will turnover to your opponent.

Foul 3: Potting the 8-Ball

Potting the 8-ball before all object balls have been potted results in an automatic loss.

Foul 4: Potting Cue Ball & 8-Ball at the Same Time

Potting the 8-ball and the cue ball at the same time also results in a loss. Even if it’s the game-winning shot!

Foul 5: Potting a Colored Ball Before the 8-Ball in the Same Shot

Even if the 8-ball is next in your sequence, potting it alongside a colored ball will lose you the game!
